ELAINE / EXOTICA I 19
Elaine Coles is an established British ceramicist, currently exploring the transfer process of digital print artwork to stoneware.
Elaine’s work is inspired from her time spent living Botswana in the 1970s. Upon her return to the UK, she studied at Goldsmiths University, London.
“From the earth the clay emerges like a newborn, waiting to be sculpted into a new being. The fire breathes life into its lungs and a new dawn begins” Elaine Coles
The Firing Process
Each individual piece is created from complex multiple firings using either porcelain or stoneware clay.
The pots have four firings, a biscuit firing followed by a glaze firing. The glazes are painted on to the surface of the pot then fired again. The decoration is created using ceramic transfers which are designed from original digital and are carefully placed onto the pot.
This work-intensive and time consuming process develops an exquisite montage of colour and patterns with added touches of gold and coloured lustres.
